Honoring Dr. King: A Day of Inspiration and Unity

On January 20th, members of our Admin team and MY Youth Leaders had the privilege of attending the 40-Year Celebration MLK Jr. Day Breakfast. The event centered on powerful themes of perseverance, systemic inequality, and overcoming adversity. We engaged in insightful conversations with fellow community leaders, reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy and how we can continue his work.

The breakfast featured a diverse range of speakers, including Reverends, council members, student speakers, and performances of music and historical songs that inspired us all!

Later that evening, more youth from MY Leaders attended the MLK Jr. Day event hosted by the City of Columbus and the Department of Neighborhoods at the Historic Lincoln Theater. It was an intimate and energetic event where youth participated in singing songs and listening to the passionate speakers.

It was a day filled with motivation, calls for social justice, and a renewed commitment to building safe, inclusive, and equal communities where everyone can thrive. We ended the day energized and ready to carry Dr. King’s vision forward, working for unity and justice every step of the way!

Building Bridges Through Unity: Lessons from Remember the Titans with Our Youth

Last week during Fun Friday, we focused on cultural awareness with our Youth Mentor Alina Hussain, who used the movie Remember the Titans to help our kids explore racial dynamics during segregation. The film illustrates how, despite deep tensions, a football team overcame prejudice and came together through respect, teamwork, and leadership. After the movie, Alina and Youth Programs Director Bashir Ahmed led a meaningful discussion, encouraging the kids to reflect on how they can apply these lessons of unity and mutual respect in their own lives. In light of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and today’s political climate, it’s more important than ever to teach our children the values of inclusivity, empathy, and neighborly love to build a brighter, more hopeful future for all. 💪🏽🤝

Winter Session ESL Classes & Saturday Cafe Conversations Are Here!

Our Winter ESL classes are in full swing! Join us every Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 PM. Our students, who are Spanish and French speakers, are greeted with warm welcome and support by our instructors, who speak both languages too! This makes the learning environment comfortable and inclusive.

Plus, we kicked off our Saturday Cafe Conversations last week! Every Saturday from 10 AM to 12 PM, we’re hosting a casual, open space for practice and connection at our café. Whether you’re looking to improve your language skills or just want to chat in a relaxed setting, these classes are open to everyone. Come join us and be part of our growing community!

Reminder: Help Us Keep Our Community Warm and Fed This Winter!

We’re still seeking donations to support our 230 winter warming center guests through this HISTORICALLY COLD winter. We’re accepting cooked meals, catering funds, and dry foods for our brunch bags, which include essential items to help keep everyone nourished and comfortable during these harsh months.

Your generosity can make a real difference in ensuring no one goes cold or hungry. Every donation counts—whether it’s a hot meal, a contribution toward catering, or food for our bags. Let’s come together to support our neighbors and make sure everyone has the warmth and sustenance they need this winter!
